Lagos State Agro-Processing, Productivity Enhancement and Livelihood Improvement Support (APPEALS) Project is strategically positioned to contribute to egg powder production for the use of the state and Nigeria as a whole and to address the issue of egg glut. It is based on this justification that the need for the consultancy Study on Egg Power Development and Investments in Support of Poultry Value Chain becomes very urgent and relevant. The purpose of the Consultancy is to undertake a study on Egg Powder Development and Investments in Support of Poultry Value Chain to boost the processing of eggs and reduce egg glut in Lagos State.

The study is a project of Agro-Processing, Productivity Enhancement and Livelihood Support (APPEALS) in Lagos State with the aim to profile International market link for exporters of aquaculture products and unravel the standard requirements of major aquaculture trade centers around the globe.

A cross sectional survey research design and multistage sampling technique was adopted for this survey. Purposive sampling technique was first used to select clusters that have more beneficiaries within the value chains of Aquaculture, Poultry, and Rice; while random sampling technique was adopted in selecting beneficiaries across the marketing, processing, and production enterprises in the selected value chains. The reliability of the questionnaire was confirmed using Cronbach Alpha, while content validity was used to establish the validity of the survey instrument. Data collected from the selected beneficiaries of the APPEALS Project were analysed using both descriptive inferential statistics.

The entrepreneur is a beneficiary of the Lagos State Agro-Processing, Productivity Enhancement and Livelihood Improvement support (APPEALS) Project on Aquaculture and was trained at Aquatic Hub Afrique Network, Abeokuta, Ogun State. The business is primarily based on mainly catfish processing, the production capacity is 4200 kg of fresh catfish per annum, to produce 1050kg smoked catfish, and to generate an income of N5,040,000 per annum.

Organic culture: culturing of fresh catfish from beginning to the end without any form of artificial growth chemical base that would lead to harmful health issues to customers and also negatively affect yield. We will provide the fishes with quality feeds produced from non-toxic materials that would enhance the productivity, quality of the fish and cost effective.

This is to increase the quality and sales of processed poultry meat (broiler) in the State , It is to create employment, And also, to facilitate access to the market for poultry (broiler) producers in the state

The business is a livestock farm enterprise, raising layers for eggs production considering the demand and supply and consumption pattern of egg within the state and the country at large. The produce will be egg for start in which service like transportation for door step delivery, packaging on customers’ demand, to reduce the stress of transportation inconveniences and to prevent wastage caused due to transportation will be rendering. The farm will be established at Epe on one plot of land. The farm will be operated and managed by two personnel, the produce is eggs and later incorporates other livestock for expansion.

The Entrepreneur has undergone a 2-week intensive training on rice production with the Lagos state APPEALS project at Agricultural Training Institute, Araga, Epe, Lagos. The entrepreneur intends to cultivate on 2ha of land on slightly sandy clay loamy soil with 2 seasons production per annum.

Youths and women will also be encouraged to invest their time in rice packaging and marketing by creating job opportunities which will reduce rural- urban migration and also contribute to the development of the host community and its environs.

The objective of the sub project is to strengthen and increase tilapia production, facilitate fish farmers access into the market, reduce post- harvest loss, provide access to an all year round fish supply and also increase fish sales by the SME.

APPEALS Project which is aimed at enhancing productivity of major players along the value chain using their available facilities while bearing in mind the limiting factors, will help to improve access of participating small and medium scale farmers and SMEs to technology, infrastructure, finance, and output markets.

Mosan Community Fish Farmer CIG presently produces about 59MT of catfish grow-out per annum and the project intends to increase their production to 116MT of hybrid catfish within 5 the first year of intervention. Based on the national fish production figure of 1,027,000tons1 the CIG have a market share of 0.00057

The APPEALS Project initiated by the Federal Government with the objective of enhancing agricultural productivity of small and medium scale farmers and improve value addition along priority value chains in participating states will be supporting EASYSHOP EASYCOOK SERVICES LIMITED as one of the offtakers in the proposed business alliance in the area of increasing her marketing and distribution capacity in order to get more processed chickens to the market.

The support is expected to yield an average liveweight of 2.5kg at 6weeks for the broilers raised as against 2.2kg hitherto realized at 8weeks by the farmers. The farmers are thus able to do 4cycles of production annually. A higher profit and return on investment are thus realized by the farmers. Their current scale of production of 174,500 broiler chickens per annum will also be increased to 218,800 broiler chickens per annum (25.39% increase) through the proposed business alliance and technical intervention of the APPEALS Project.

The main objective is to further scale up the processor and improve on the processing capability. This will enable the processor to increase the volume of milled rice and increase/expand the areas of distribution, thereby getting more products to the high-end market due to improved quality of the product. There will be continuous need to increase rice production as the average, per caput rice consumption level in Nigeria is at 20.77kg/person/year in 2007 and an estimated human population of over 22million people in Lagos alone, annual rice consumption in Lagos state was estimated to be798,000 metric tons (premium Times march 24th 2016).

Ofada rice remain a premium rice brand as such does not have competition from outside the country except from competition from neighbouring States to Lagos State and some Eastern State (Abakaliki rice) in the country

The Grainfield Cooperatives and Multipurpose Society (CAMS) has an average yield of 2.0 MT. The project proposes to improve their yield to 4MT per hectare which will amount to 8MT per hectare per annum (2cycles per annum). A total of 160 MT of paddy rice per annum will be produced by the group which will give 104 MT of milled rice per annum.

Enriching aquaculture business with Tilapia cage culture

This document captures the success story of a supported beneficiary and rice processor, Mrs . Oluwatoyin Oluwole of Rikky Store Limited (Arike Ofada Rice) from Alimosho Local Government in Lagos State.

Broiler production in Lagos State has been identified as one of the lucrative agricultural businesses thriving in the State. This is due mainly to the opportunities it offers entrepreneurs in completing a cycle and making profit within a short period of time, usually an average of six (6) weeks per cycle and the comparative advantage of consumer population / customers in the State.

Over sixty (60) percent of farmers in Afowo and its environs in the Badagry community are predominantly fish farmers and they depend on fishing for food and means of livelihood. They are also into other small-scale businesses like rice farming and poultry for sale and consumption. The closeness of Badagry to the Benin Republic also provides an avenue for some people to be involved in the importation and exportation of goods.
